Four treasure-laden galleons disappeared in 1605. More than four centuries later, archival evidence, geophysical surveys, and recovered material point to Bajo Nuevo Reef.
NOVEMBER 6, 1605
A violent Caribbean storm overtook the Tierra Firme fleet. Four galleons - including the Capitana San Roque and Almiranta Santo Domingo - were driven onto the reef system now known as Bajo Nuevo.
Their cargo included gold, silver, emeralds, and colonial wealth transported from Peru and Colombia. None of the four ships was historically recovered.
